Ubuntu 10.04 /boot or /dev/sda startup mount problem

After a long gap,I am back to Ubuntu from Fedora and I am really impressed by the pleasing interface ‘Lucid Lynx’ comes up with. ๐Ÿ™‚

After installing Windows XP ,I installed Ubuntu 10.04.The installation process was smooth. But the problem I faced when I restarted the system is, at the splash startup screen. It said ,

The disk drive for /boot is not ready yet or not present.

Continue to wait, press S to skip or M for manual recovery.

I waited for a long time and it is of no use.so I skipped the process and edited some file to mount it automatically.

here is what I did,

1.Open your terminal by ctrl+alt+t or Applications –> Accessories –> Terminal

2.use the below command in terminal,

gksudo gedit /etc/fstab

3.A file will open,find /boot line.It will look something like this ,

/dev/sda2 /boot ext4 defaults 0 0

4.Now open another terminal and use the below command ,

ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid

5.Now find the UUID for /dev/sda2 and replace the below line in fstab ,

/dev/sda2 /boot ext4 defaults 0 0

as

UUID=a647ea33-74ee-4123-84bf-7edc32e2e39b /boot ext4 defaults 0 0

[Replace the UUID number with your number]

6.save the file and restart the system. It will work fine. The same solution can be addressed for /dev/sda mounting problem.

Auspicious day – a very good marketing strategy

We all celebrate festivals. Each religion has their own festivals. Also,Each religion and caste have their own auspicious days.In India,Hinduism, which is a major religion have many auspicious days. They consider Friday is a good day to start things and so on.So why do we start things on such days.I was keep on thinking about that today.I finally got some clues. They start things at that day, because we all believe it’s a good day.So if we believe it’s a good day, then it promotes positive thought. It is similar to and an abstract meaning of Murphy law “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”.Also,I got an important thing about that day.Yes,it’s a marketing strategy.

Consider yourself starting a concern. So what is important for a newly formed concern, its marketing. You advertise it in newspapers,Television,Internet and all types of media.Well,I say,the cheapest method of marketing is starting your concern at an auspicious day.All know that only good things are done at that day.So starting a concern in an auspicious day with added positive energy and inviting people at that day, will eventually boost thoughts about your concern in a positive way.Now your company is not only advertised, but also made a thought in others mind something like “they are doing things in this good day,so it must be good….” .So next time you start things at that day and you want to advertise your company or any,do a good demo of what you are doing.so that all are well-informed and it will create a good impression. ๐Ÿ™‚

Best picture of the year – “sarcastic Linus” :P

Linus has the word "sarcasm" written on his teeth.

Linus has the word "sarcasm" written on his teeth.

Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center.

During a break, somebody decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When others arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that’s what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man!

I am not a fan of WINE..

My fedora 11 linux machine was running good, with faster boot up[ 21 seconds to the login screen ๐Ÿ™‚ ],until I installed WINE in it.As a web-developer,I am in need of IE6,for cross browser compatibility issues that will occur only in that browser, while others are working fine.so I had to install WINE,to run ies4linux script.Unfortunately, after installing WINE,my fedora freezes then and there.I cannot open a browser,I cannot open my back up drive.Everything freezes.Even my cpu2 performance level went for 30-50% increase. Also,WINE runs slowly.I am sure, that ies4linux caused such problem. Also,my booting of fedora went for more than a minute. So I uninstalled WINE and ies4linux,but still my bootup time got slow and my fedora freezes all of the sudden.so I went for reboot and used ‘ctrl+alt+F2’ at the login page.I don’t know what was the problem,so I logged in as root user and run ‘fsck‘ and it solved my problem. It seems that an unwanted script in ies4linux,has blocked my entire fedora. The fsck cleaned it with zero errors and now my fedora is back.

Silappathikaram and Robert kiyosaki

You might be wondering what Silappathikaram going to do with Robert kiyosaki. What I am going to tell you here,is a fact that “The History Repeats Itself” or you might consider this as an illustration of “Chaos theory”.Silappathikaram, which was written by Ilangovadigal,1000 yrs back, still proves itself, that it is one of the five great epics.Recently,I was listening to “Rich Dad,Poor Dad” audio book.I was really amazed. It was fabulous.

I read Silappathikaram.I was really surprised to know how Robert Kiyosaki and Ilangovadigal mentioned same thing in a different manner.

In Rich Dad,Poor Dad,

“…..Poor dad believed in a company or the government taking care of you and your needs. He was always concerned about pay raises, retirement plans, medical benefits, sick leave, vacation days and other perks. He was impressed with two of his uncles who joined the military and earned a retirement and entitlement package for life after twenty years of active service. He loved the idea of medical benefits and PX privileges the military provided its retirees. He also loved the tenure system available through the university. The idea of job protection for life and job benefits seemed more important, at times, than the job. He would often say, “I’ve worked hard for the government, and I’m entitled to these benefits.”

The other believed in total financial self-reliance. He spoke out against the “entitlement” mentality and how it was creating weak and financially needy people. He was emphatic about being financially competent….”

Also,

Poor dad thought that the rich should pay more in taxes to take care of those less fortunate. The other said, “Taxes punish those who produce and reward those who don’t produce”

In Silappathikaram,it has been said,

Those who are generous in helping the needy and poor are mentioned as assiduous, smart and they know how to make money. While the person who gets money from generous people is said to be lethargic, dumb and stupid.

This is how they both pertain to same meaning in a very different manner.

Install Eclipse Galileo/Ganymede on Fedora 11

Step 1:

Before installing Eclipse IDE,make sure you installed JDK/JRE.If you have not installed it,follow the instruction provided in the below link,

link

step 2:

Download the Eclipse IDE from eclipse download site,as tar.gz file.

step 3:

After the tar.gz file is downloaded, open the terminal and type

#tar xzvf filename.tar.gz

This will extract the file in the parent directory

step 4:

Move to eclipse folder,

#cd ~/eclipse

Open the eclipse.ini file,

#gedit eclipse.ini

The file will look something like this,

-startup

Now add the following lines before the ‘-vmargs’,

-vm
/[HOME-DIRECTORY]/jdk1.6.0_xx/bin/java

[ make sure you follow the same pattern as above, the path should be an absolute one starting from parent directory to the java, and replace ‘xx’ by the version you are using. ]

After adding the line, the file will look something like this,
